Words With Warriors: Creating a Larger Library

My Students

Our students are running out of books in our classroom library to read! They struggle to find books of interest or at the appropriate level. Help spark their interest and make them true reading warriors!

I teach a beautiful, blossoming bunch of 46 second graders in Mississippi.

We are a 2nd and 3rd grade public elementary school with over 900 students. My students range greatly in their reading abilities, from beginning readers to students at the 4th grade level. We are in an inclusion setting and have children with very diverse abilities. They love books about mystery, adventure, animals, and famous people. Many of our students are eager to read and are motivated by Accelerated Reader. Some of our students have not found that spark for reading, and we want to light it!

My Project

Our students are in need of books based on their interests and reading levels. Information was gathered from parent and student surveys about their interests. These 48 children's books will reach all of our students. Every child will bring a book home each week to read with a family member or friend or by himself. The books will be placed in a book bag with activities specific to that book. Our students will develop fluency, learn sight words, develop vocabulary, draw conclusions, identify main idea, sequence events, and countless other comprehension skills. Partnerships between parents, students, and teachers will be fostered through the Words With Warriors program. Parents who struggle with assisting their child at home on comprehension skills will be provided with a guide. Students will have more reading materials available at home. The more Words children are able to interact With, the greater reading Warriors they will become.

Our students will develop a love for reading because they will have access to books on their level and targeted to their interests.

Their fluency, decoding skills, and comprehension skills will all improve. In return, their self-confidence will undoubtedly increase. Our students will become lifelong readers and learners!
