My Project

My students are middle school level students in grades 6-8. They benefit from having access to unique and exciting ways to improve their word recognition skills and their vocabularies. It never gets old when a student begins to develop a love of language and a thirst for increasing their vocabulary in order to understand the social and academic worlds that they are attempting to fit into.

Students often struggle with reading comprehension in school because they do not possess the oral vocabulary that is a prerequisite to their understanding and retention of content-area texts.

Limited vocabulary knowledge can negatively impact the development of a student's reading comprehension skills. Knowing vocabulary words is key to reading comprehension. The more words a child knows, the better he or she will understand the text. However, simply learning new words and their meanings is not enough; students need to be given unique, fun ways to incorporate the new vocabulary words they learn into their every day lives if these new words are going to become part of a child’s working vocabulary. Playing the word game Scrabble is a fabulously exciting way to practice spelling and defining words, while at the same time helping students make friends and learn how to think strategically.
