Words, Wishes, and Wonder: 4th Grade Novel Study

Help me give my students engaging novel studies of The Chocolate Touch and Frindle as they dive into imaginative stories, build strong reading comprehension skills, and grow as thoughtful, independent readers in my 4th grade classroom.

My Project

My students will explore Frindle and The Chocolate Touch through engaging novel studies that build comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. These books will give students meaningful opportunities to read closely, think deeply, and discuss their ideas with confidence.

In my 4th grade classroom, I teach a group of curious, creative, and energetic learners who thrive when reading feels fun and meaningful.

Many of my students are discovering for the first time that they can truly enjoy chapter books and think deeply about what they read. These novels will help them grow as readers while keeping them excited and engaged.

In Frindle, students will discover the power of words and creativity when one simple idea grows into something much bigger. In The Chocolate Touch, students will enjoy a humorous and imaginative story about wishes, choices, and consequences. Both novels are highly engaging and perfect for building strong reading skills.

Why This Matters:

In 4th grade, students are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. This is a critical stage where strong reading skills impact success across all subjects. When students are engaged in what they are reading, they build stamina, confidence, and a deeper understanding of texts.

These novel studies also create a shared reading experience where students can collaborate, discuss, and learn from one another. They will practice identifying text evidence, making inferences, understanding character change, and building vocabulary—all essential skills for lifelong learning.
