My Students

My classroom is full of seventh graders that are making the transition from elementary to middle school. Our school is a two year stop on the way to high school. These two years can support the journey to high school and beyond if the classroom has the right tools. From advanced students that really love to read write and experiment with all the different strategies taught in class to the students that struggle with the English language but still want to keep up, my students want to succeed and are willing to use effort to do so. I have a number of AVID students who are learning to use their determination to be successful.

My classroom is full of budding readers and writers that need the advantage of a good vocabulary, so they can be at the top of their game.

Our class motto is to run with the bulls. They don't want to be left behind. They have great plans for their future! They need good vocabulary skills to pave the way to make their dreams a reality. Although they may stumble and fall, they dust themselves off and keep running.

My Project

Words.....vocabulary....they are the building blocks to success in reading and writing. Without a strong vocabulary, a student hits a roadblock and literally becomes stuck. My project requests a year's subscription for my students to a top notch vocabulary website that meets the students at their own level. Instead of the cookie cutter....one size fits all...book, this vocabulary program meets each student at their own level and pushes them forward.

Imagine how much easier it would be to write an essay or comprehend a book if a student had a strong grasp of the English language!

It would be life changing. This summer Membean allowed teachers to have a free subscription due to the fact that COVID-19 closed down our school. The great majority of my students loved it. I assigned them a ten minute workout a day on their words. The students would get their own set of words with a video using their word, example sentences to imitate, an etymology tree...... and much more. They would then be asked questions about their words.....determining whether they were ready to move on or needed more practice. One student said Membean became her getaway place where she could escape for ten minutes from all that was going on around her in quarantine. Another boy who broke his toe thanked me for assigning a Membean workout because he actually could forget the pain while he was doing his ten minute workout. The students enjoyed their time working on vocabulary. That's right! I said middle schoolers "enjoyed" learning new words. Membean did the impossible.
