My students are amazing! My students range from ages 3 years to 12 years of age. We are a Title I school, with approximately 65% of students on free and reduced lunch. My students vary from non-verbal special needs to verbal general education students. My favorite thing about my students is how hard they work every day to communicate effectively across the school, home and community environments no matter the level of their disability.
My students work in a positive environment in which everyone is provided the opportunity to achieve successful communication to their fullest potential.
My Project
Non-verbal students can often be left to use alternative modes of communication, and become restricted to only requesting items of interest. Communication skills are much more than requesting. We use communication daily to share events, comment, ask questions, and for social interactions, along with requesting.
The wordless picture books will assist my non-verbal students in expanding and using their language in a traditional verbal way, telling stories.
These books will help my verbal students learn to sequence events, as well as build vocabulary, to become more successful communicators in the classroom and community environment.
We focus heavily on core words which build a foundation for communication and literacy skills. By using books like Goodnight Gorilla, Chalk, and the other books listed, my students can expand their voice through telling stories using wordless picture books. We learn so much from experiences, and who doesn't love a good book?
