My Students

My students are beginning readers who need to practice and memorize their sight words. High Frequency Sight Words are the words that occur most often in print. Learning to read these words will greatly improve my students' reading fluency. Word Work activities are fun and engaging ways to do this.

My school is a Title I school.

Fifty-nine percent of the students that attend my school are from low-income homes and receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them are English language learners whose parents do not speak English and have difficulty helping them with school work at home. That makes their learning time at school even more important.

My Project

The resources I am requesting will allow my students a variety of materials to practice their high frequency sight words. I have requested white boards and markers so that students can practice writing their words. Magnet boards and letter magnets will be used together so students can spell out these words with magnets. Magic write boards will be used so the children can spell their words out on these. Students can use the lowercase rubber letter stamps to stamp out their words during our stamp and write activity. The CVC materials will provide students opportunities to sound out consonant vowel consonant words helping to improve and solidify their phonics skills. The large classroom easel will provide a place to display the morning message, a letter written to students at the start of each day that includes sight words. We read this message together as a class. This easel can also be used as a workstation for students and a place to display the sight words we are focusing on for the week.

In the primary grades, and in first grade in particular, learning should be fun.

These materials will provide my students a fun and engaging way to practice their high frequency sight words on a daily basis. Academic choice has been proven to greatly improve student engagement and providing these resources will allow students a variety of ways in which to engage in their daily word work.
