Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I love that my students are able to come in from various situations, many of which are very tough, and still smile, push themselves, and do school. I love the fact that many of them do not accept the assembly line format of education and seek education to make real world connections that are relevant to their lives.
When going through certain lessons, I get the opportunity to hear their perspectives on topics like the way the country is run, and what could make education better all while working toward our academic goals.
While some might see certain expressions of students as rebellious, or inappropriate, I see many of them as opportunities to identify real questions from students, and point them to the tools to find answers as well.
I love working with my students. They are very honest, funny, and strong.
My Project
I currently teach high school English and Creative Writing. Although both these classes are focused around reading and writing, I feel that sometimes throwing in a game or some art projects can not only get students more engaged in learning, but also help them make better connections with what is happening in the class.
We are rapidly running out of art supplies, and I nor the school currently has much funds to buy more, or word games for that matter.
For this reason, I have included things like poster boards, markers, and colored pencils. In the past, we have used supplies such as these to accompany student writing projects such as their essays about debatable issues in our country. For this project, students were able to use supplies such as these to get their point across in a creative way. This is especially helpful for students who express themselves better through drawing and artistic expression rather than through words. As for the word games, they will be used in creative writing to help students understand the many ways words can be used to help them in the creative writing process.
These supplies will be a great help to the class and I believe will help students engage in and connect with the work we are doing on a deeper level.
