I am a first grade teacher at a Title 1 school. My children come into my classroom with very little experience and vocabulary. I would like to add a word family center to my daily center activity time. I would like to add word wallets and hands on activities that I have found in a lesson book. Learning about word families is imperative for spelling and reading. When children realize that there are patterns to words, spelling and reading suddenly become easier. I think that if I can make any learning experience more fun that it is worth my time and efforts. Learning should be fun. These activities also lead to the discovery of the patterns. When things are discovered they are more likely to be remembered and used than if they are just told to the student.
