Through our PBIS program, students consistently strive to show kindness, responsibility, and perseverance—and being able to \"shop\" for festive prizes using the points they earned made those efforts feel seen and valued. The smiles on their faces as they carefully chose their rewards were unforgettable.\r\nBeyond the excitement of the holiday store, the crafts and activities you supported brought our classroom community even closer together. With the materials provided, students were able to explore engineering, weather, and the human body in ways that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Instead of simply reading about these topics, they were actively building, experimenting, and discovering.\r\nOne of the most exciting outcomes was how invested students became in problem-solving and scientific inquiry. Using the engineering kits, they designed and tested their own creations, learning through trial and error. The weather STEM kits allowed them to explore extreme weather in a safe, interactive way, while the slime materials made lessons on matter and chemical reactions both fun and memorable. The human ear model gave students a concrete way to understand how sound travels, which deepened their comprehension significantly.\r\nBecause of these materials, I was able to shift my teaching toward a more student-centered, inquiry-based approach. Lessons became more interactive, and students were more willing to take risks, ask questions, and collaborate with one another. The treasure box rewards served as meaningful recognition for students who demonstrated kindness, responsibility, respect, and safe choices, helping them understand the connection between their actions and positive outcomes.\r\n\r\nThe impact on students was immediate and sustained. Students became more intentional about their behavior, frequently reminding one another of expected norms and celebrating peers who made positive choices. This fostered a classroom culture grounded in encouragement rather than correction, where students felt valued and motivated to succeed. The reward system also supported social-emotional growth by helping students develop self-regulation, accountability, and intrinsic motivation over time.\r\n\r\nBeyond behavior, the initiative strengthened classroom community and engagement. Students were more actively involved in learning routines, transitions became smoother, and instructional time increased due to reduced disruptions. The system also supported equity by ensuring all students had clear, consistent expectations and equal opportunities to be recognized for positive behavior.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project contributed to a safe, supportive, and joyful learning environment where students understood that positive choices lead to positive outcomes, reinforcing both academic success and social-emotional development.","fullyFundedDate":1771010545956,"projectUrl":"project/pbis-treasure-box-rewards-to-inspire-pos/10079173/","projectTitle":"PBIS Treasure Box Rewards to Inspire Positive Choices","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cornito","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9222962_orig.jpg?crop=400,400,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692989838401","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-cornito"},{"teacherId":4569418,"projectId":9613858,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our Donorschoose project for STEAM resources! Because of your generosity, my students now have hands-on STEAM materials that spark curiosity, creativity, and joyful learning every single day.\r\nThese resources have completely transformed how my students explore and think. With painting rocks and acrylic paint pens, they design story stones, create patterns, and build their own narratives—blending art, literacy, and imagination. Our outdoor chalk time has turned into active math investigations as students draw shapes, create number lines, and solve problems together. The dough tools and extruders strengthen fine motor skills while students engineer and test their own structures.\r\nThe glowing marble run has quickly become a favorite. Students eagerly design tracks, predict outcomes, and adjust their designs as they investigate gravity, force, and motion. They are learning to ask questions like scientists and problem-solve like engineers. The magnetic character set has also inspired rich storytelling and collaborative play, helping students combine engineering with creativity and social learning.\r\nMost importantly, these materials encourage critical thinking. My students are planning, testing ideas, revising their designs, and working together to solve challenges. They're not just playing—they're thinking deeply, communicating their ideas, and building confidence as learners.\r\nBecause of you, our classroom is a place where every child can be a scientist, an engineer, an artist, and an inventor. This year I have held groups, and individual sessions, with students who have lost parents in the past 12 months, students who are experiencing homelessness, foster children, loss of a friend in school to suicide, etc. These are students who have been through and experienced trauma and loss many adults have not had to experience.
