This year I have held groups, and individual sessions, with students who have lost parents in the past 12 months, students who are experiencing homelessness, foster children, loss of a friend in school to suicide, etc. These are students who have been through and experienced trauma and loss many adults have not had to experience. These kids are doing amazing work and these materials helped in getting kids out of their shells and comfortable. They were eager to explore the blocks and couldn't wait to begin building and sharing their creations. Knowing these tools were provided by caring donors made the experience even more special. Our next steps include using the blocks in upcoming geometry and problem-solving lessons, as well as incorporating them into cooperative group challenges that strengthen teamwork.
