This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are in need of some new tools to make word building fun!

I am a special education teacher working in an urban, high-needs community.

My class consists of 10 students with autism ranging in age from 6 to 10 years old. My students present with a wide range of abilities. Most of my students have communication impairments and use pictures to communicate. They also have sensory issues and are challenged to remain still and focused. Despite their challenges, my students are eager and excited to learn.

My Project

It is my goal to build a well-defined, structured learning environment for my students where they can become independent learners. Throughout the day my students rotate through different activities. During this time my students are all working on skills at many different levels. My students love table top activity time and love learning with manipulatives. I am requesting a few new tools for word building! The V'Tech Phonics game is interactive and will offer feedback on the sounds and words for my students. My students love letter manipulatives and the I Can Build Word Center will guide my students through spelling words. The cards have 2 sides offering students the amount of support they need. The spelling board sets will make sure everyone has tools to work with. My students are multi-sensory learners and will benefit from the hands-on opportunities to build words with these letters. In addition, these activities will help my students to generalize their skills by offering them multiple learning opportunities to build some words!
