Wonderful Ways to Spark Interest for Reading in Kindergarten

My Students

During the 2018-2019 school year, I am teaching Kindergarten. This is my fifth year at this grade level, and I have 20 students on my roster. There are a variety of student backgrounds in our class. We have students that look forward to school every day because they are able to have a meal, and quality social interactions. The students are very energetic and willing to learn.

Our neighborhood is a rural community with great people that support the school.

The school district is on a tight budget, and we are finding new ways, like donors choose, to help get the tools that our students need in order to learn. These students have big hearts, and love hand-on learning. It is wonderful to watch their faces light up when they get to use fun learning tools!

For very young children, using math manipulatives provides opportunities to learn in fun, new ways. We have an incredible group of five-year-olds in this class that would love to have the chance to use some updated math tools. These kids are motivated to learn and need the right tools to help them along their journey.

My Project

I am an advocate for my students and want them to be given every advantage that all other kindergarten students have. Being given paper and pencil is not the best way for young kindergartners to learn. What if students were able to have access to learning tools that made learning fun and seem like a game? How much more exciting would that be? Why just give students a bag of letters when they could use the letters in a variety of fun ways? The Reading Skills Folder Game Libraries and the Pop & Match Beginning Phonics Games - Complete Set will help my students be excited about learning at school. They are so young that they need to have exciting ways to channel their energy into their learning.

The brain’s ability to reorganize and form new connections throughout life is highly enhanced when we can make learning fun.

We are asking for literature based learning centers, learning letters and so much more. These resources will help us build our multi-sensory classroom. Kindergarten is a foundational grade and I want my students to have the skills that will take them from meets to exceeds.
