Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.”
― R.J. Palacio, Wonder
These important themes conveyed in the amazing novel "Wonder" are the same themes I try to convey to my students every year.
My students are a diverse population in every sense of the word.
Most come from a less advantaged background and many are second language learners. Our school has a strong sense of community and our kids feel safe and cared for at school. I love working with our students and seeing such tremendous growth both academically and emotionally as they progress through the grades.
My Project
I teach language arts to the entire 6th grade. We love learning reading skills and vocabulary skills, practicing these skills, and growing as individuals through reading and studying rich novels like "Wonder." This book not only teaches tolerance, acceptance, friendship, kindness, and courage, but is also rich in vocabulary and figurative language. It is an amazing story and every child will grow as a person after reading it.
We will be reading "Wonder" in three different ways; as a whole group, in literature circles, and in partners. We will then do many activities and projects as we navigate through the novel.
Reading novels is so much more engaging to students than reading short stories in a text book.
With this book I am able to teach many reading skills such as cause and effect, plot, characters viewpoint, and author's purpose. We can also use it to develop new, rich vocabulary and learn about and practice identifying many types of figurative language. And best of all, we can do all this while learning life lessons and enjoying rich literature.
