The book Wonder is a wonder. It's one of the best books my students will read in their lifetime. Our district just doesn't have the resources to give every sixth grader the opportunity to read this life-changing book. My students will discover so much about the characters and themselves.
My students are from many diverse backgrounds and demographics in the suburbs southwest of Chicago.
Usually, I have over half of my students who can speak multiple languages. My students are impressive readers and writers. They give their best every single day, and they adore when I support their needs with high-interest, life-altering texts. My students have different levels of needs, and they are always ready to improve. They work very hard to please me, and are my number one priority. I have worked in the same school for ten years now, and I have to say that my love for my students has never wavered. They are simply "wonders."
My Project
Wonder is a warm, uplifting story that will have you laughing one minute and wiping away tears the next. With wonderfully realistic family interactions, lively school scenes, and short chapters, Wonder is the book for my students' generation. I cannot put into words how amazing this book is. We will read this novel with our first unit on self-discovery. Through the main character, August, my students will learn about life, perseverance, discovering who they truly are, and a respect for all peers. I taught a small test group last year with novels I checked out from various libraries in my area and this is what my students thought:
-It makes you want to keep reading.
-It has a lot of characters so the variety keeps you intrigued.
-The story is told by different characters' point of view.
-IT'SÃÂÃÂÃÂs different from every other book on the shelf.
-It's easy to read because of the short chapters.
-The story line is inspiring.
-You can empathize with the main character.
I cannot afford to buy this amazing novel for my students.
If I had to pick one thing to teach them all year, this would be it. I have never FELT so much for one particular book and teaching it to middle schoolers. It is imperative that they have the opportunity to read this book. I treasure it. I marvel in R.J. Palacio's extraordinary take on this topic. I only hope to share this wondrous novel with my future students. Every single student in our country today should read this book!
