I teach a group of 20 highly motivated second graders who are eager to learn and explore. Most of them come from single-parent households. Many have also experienced homelessness; however, they are high-spirited and excited about learning. Rarely is anyone absent because they are very passionate about learning. Their learning experience would be greatly enhanced with the addition of upgraded math and literacy materials.
The students in my class attend an urban district with financial struggles.
All the students in my class receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of them have experienced crime in their lives and find it difficult to come to school. They live in a very dangerous blight-filled city where high crime and poverty have been the norm for more than a decade.
My students deserve an opportunity to learn and thrive in an environment that supports 21st Century Learning.
There continues to be a slide in the school's budget, so any chance to provide them with additional resources are extremely limited. We are in need of supplies and accessories for math and literacy .
An upgrade in our Math and Literacy centers will allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. With your help, these centers will house the tools needed to strengthen identified areas of concern. Currently, my students are working in centers with outdated materials and using resources that are worn, torn and sometimes discolored. Proper tools are an essential component in insuring the effectiveness of differentiated instruction and motivating students. It is important to have students that are engaged in activities that interest them and address their needs.
All students should have access to the tools they need to insure their success.
With the requested materials, students will have the resources needed to assist them in learning time, money and place value. The hands-on materials like clocks, the money kit, puzzles and a place value activity center will be an invaluable asset in providing the practice needed to attain proficiency in math. The addition and subtraction regrouping kits are needed for those who are struggling with basic math involving 2 and 3 digit numbers. The comprehension center will assist struggling readers in strengthening reading skills. These kits will be used to enhance classroom lessons and reinforce specific skills and concepts in math and literacy.
I am certain that the upgraded resources will have a positive affect on my students' work and demeanor. I'm also certain it will help them to master the skills needed to succeed. Please help!
