Wonder-One Book, One School

My students need 50 copies of the book Wonder as part of their One Book, One School literacy and character education.

My Students

My students live in a small but rapidly growing town. Our school enrollment has increased by 50% in the last 10 years. We are busting at the seams! These students are from low to middle income homes, 50% of our students are on free/reduced lunch.

These middle school students are at a crucial point in their life in which their are becoming independent from their parents and making their own choices.

Character education plays in important role in their life long learning.

My Project

These books will be for students to use during their One Book, One School initiative. All 750 students and staff will be reading the book Wonder by RJ Palacio.

Reading this book will serve two purposes.

First students will participate in reading and writing activities in their Literacy classes. We are planning fun and interactive activities that will excite kids about reading. Secondly, we are planning to address kindness and bullying through the story. Middle school students deal with insecurities, bullying, and being bullied. This story deals with a student who is bullied for being different, will allow students and teachers to engage in conversations about bullying without being confrontational or accusatory. We hope this open dialogue will encourage students to be kinder to one another.
