Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher at a Title I with students that come from low incomes and high poverty, we don't always have the resources that we need, but we still prove to be successful with our daily work. My class of 5th graders come from different countries all across Latin America, have different backgrounds from their outside communities, families, and lifestyle, and are on different learning levels (below, on and above).
Teaching at a Title I school that is also part of the Primary Years Program means our daily schedule is full!
Beyond the standard Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts, my students learn Italian, attend different specials and receive ESOL services plus many additional activities and services throughout the school year. My class is large and the school is large, but the learning and teaching is larger, which makes my job worth it!
My Project
As part of our reading curriculum, we read the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. As we were finishing up the book, a student asked, "Ms. Jessen can we put on a play of this book?" which was then proceeded by a class cheer of yeses, yeahs, and please! Since this was student action, I wasn't going to deny them this opportunity, so #WC (Wonder Club) was formed by my class, and a play adapted to the book was formed.
The class has decided that the only costume they want to wear during the play are jeans and t-shirts that they create with "Choose Kind" on it.
By gifting them with these tees, fabric paints, and fabric markers, they'll be able to express themselves by creating their own "Choose Kind" shirt and they won't have to stress trying to come up with the money. They'll be able to focus on rehearsing, singing and creating the background scenes and making their costume the best that they can. My class is very excited and proud of this action and can't wait to perform for their parents on an evening in April.
