Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are very hard working and passionate urban youth who love new experiences and adventures. Our 5th graders are a small group yet big in caring and love for their community and our world.
They have a passion for learning and a determination to learn more and more about the world around them.
My students attend an inner-city school in Minneapolis. Of our 50 5th grade students, 12% are considered Homeless or Highly Mobile (HHM), 64% are English Language Learners and 100% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Our 5th graders are an amazing group of students with an enthusiasm for learning and new experiences.
Most of our students have had limited exposure to the wilderness and outdoor education. However, they have a love for science and hands-on experiences. We hope to be able to give our students this wonderful and enriching learning experience in the outdoors!
My Project
We will be taking our students to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Northern Minnesota. Our students have limited experience traveling outside the city and this will be an exciting learning opportunity for them. We will spend two nights and three days at the center which is similar to a camp. Students will engage in outdoor learning activities related to ecology, fishing, astronomy, weather, geology, renewable energy, Native American history, canoeing/hiking, team-building activities, etc.
Our goal is to have students connect deeply to the world in an unforgettable way.
Our 5th-grade curriculum focuses intently on natural systems, concepts of community, the impact of humans in the world, and the relationships between humans and their environment. Having this experience at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center will provide a deeper level of understanding for our students through hands-on learning and instruction which is different than what is available at school. Since this trip is at the end of our school year, it will serve as a culmination of all the science learning that we have done throughout the year and send our students off to middle school with a greater understanding of their connection to the world, their fellow humans, and their environment. This trip will also focus on their character development and create a lasting bond with their classmates.
