Wobbling While Working

My students need wobble stools to support their active nature, while still allowing them to focus on lessons without distracting others.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic learners who set high expectations for themselves. Our school community is incredibly diverse, with families coming from India, China, Korea, Mexico and the Philippines. Many students are English language learners and a large number of students are the first in their family to go through schooling in the US. Most students are involved in 2 or more after school and weekend enrichment classes - some to learn a second or third language, others to get additional help on school lessons, and still others who are driven to learn material beyond their grade level.

With all the attention being paid to academic achievement, we often forget that these students are only 10 & 11 years old.

I try to fill my classroom with music and movement and creativity as much as possible. We connect science to our art work, and we discuss what we've learned in Social Studies while reading historical fiction. We talk about how to be good citizens, how to show kindness to others, and how to be accountable for our choices. We work together to become the best humans we can be!

My Project

I purchased 3 wobble stools with my own money, and students are always asking when it is their turn to have one. For students who struggle to focus, this little bit of movement is often all that is needed. I saw a huge increase in the attention level of my constant "wigglers" when they were able to use the stool instead of a traditional chair. They also tuck nicely out of the way, which is so important in a class crowded with students, desks, tables and computer carts. I also have one taller stool stashed under my desk, which is perfect to take out when I'm working one-on-one with a student. I no longer need to have students waste time moving a chair to my desk in order to work with me.

When students engage their bodies during learning, they are more likely to retain the information being presented.

These wobble stools give students the opportunity to move but stay within their own personal space and remain on task.
