My students need ways to focus and engage their bodies and minds while constrained to traditional classroom seating! The wobble cushions and bouncy bands will allow students with extra energy and trouble focusing to better learn.
My class consists of 19 fun, bright, energetic, diverse first graders. These students support and care for one another and their achievements, lift each other up when they are down, and make me love what I do every single day.
As a Title I, inner city school, some of these students come from difficult backgrounds, many are English Language Learners, and many have learning disabilities or differences.
Due to this variety of needs in life and learning, traditional classroom materials are not always ideal for each and every student in my class.

My Project
Put a large group of 6-7 year olds in a room and ask them to sit quietly at a desk for 6 hours straight. Sound easy? Developmentally, kids this age are not ready to do what is asked of them in a traditional school environment. In addition, my class, like any other first grade class, inevitably has a handful of students who have difficulties when it comes to focus, attention, and energy conservation.
Flexible seating is one strategy many classrooms have seen growth and improvement in young students with these struggles.
Because there is not a lot of extra space in my classroom for other flexible seating options, I want to try to turn my traditional classroom seating into flexible, engaging options by adding wobble seats and bouncy bands to the current desks and chairs in my room.
