Put a large group of 6-7 year olds in a room and ask them to sit quietly at a desk for 6 hours straight. Sound easy? Developmentally, kids this age are not ready to do what is asked of them in a traditional school environment. In addition, my class, like any other first grade class, inevitably has a handful of students who have difficulties when it comes to focus, attention, and energy conservation. Flexible seating is one strategy many classrooms have seen growth and improvement in young students with these struggles. Because there is not a lot of extra space in my classroom for other flexible seating options, I want to try to turn my traditional classroom seating into flexible, engaging options by adding wobble seats and bouncy bands to the current desks and chairs in my room. Thank you so much for considering our project. My first graders and I are so very grateful for any help offered!!!
