I am blessed to teach two classes of 5th grade students. When I have my students, they are studying reading, writing, and social studies. They are required to sit for long, extended periods of time. My students need special seating that’s safe, supportive, and gives them the freedom to move. My classroom is filled with florescent lights. We need light filters to reduce the glare and light flickers so students’ eyes don’t have to strain and to minimize headaches.
If my students have access to flexible seating options and soft lighting, then they can stay engaged to do their best learning.
My Project
Flexible seating and soft lighting will allow my students to wobble, rock, bounce, and not struggle through glare from the lights. It is very difficult for students to be restricted to a hard chair for the majority of their school day and to strain to see through the many florescent lights in our small classroom.
Based on research some of the immediate benefits of this type of classroom are students use up excess energy, create a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improve core strength and overall posture.
Studies have also shown when students have a choice, they are more motivated and engaged. It is very important for students to choose how they will sit to do their best learning. An added benefit, when students are fully engaged behavior disturbances are minimized.
A very wise and experienced veteran teacher once said, “A student can only learn as much as their butt can endure!” Once students become uncomfortable, learning and engagement stops. I believe flexible seating, like these stability ball seats, wobble cushions, bouncy bands for the desks, and soft lighting will improve student achievement!
