My students need wobble stools to address sensory needs while learning!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My 2nd-4th grade students are kind, unique, and full of energy to learn. They are a part of a special education classroom for students with communication disabilities such as autism. Our school is a part of the Ward 8 community in Washington, D.C., a low-income area. All of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and our school is on the district's list of the 40 schools with the highest needs.
Despite challenges at home and in the community, my students work hard to improve their academic skills and social skills through targeted interventions.
These interventions target the whole student – not just their academics. Communication and social skills are a huge part of our day because autism affects my students' ability to communicate. My students communicate through pictures, sign language, and assistive technology. These methods of communication also help my students achieve academically, as they read, write, and do math. At my school, we live by the motto, "Be the best!" and I believe my students are the best.
My students love alternative seating. Some like to stand, others like to sit on the floor, and all of them love to move! The stools and chairs in my classroom do not allow for the movement that my students so desperately need.
My students need wobble stools so they can wiggle and wobble all while staying focused on their work.
Many of my students have sensory processing needs such as difficulties with balance and body awareness. This means that many of my students need to rock or spin to get sensory input. These stools would give my students the sensory input they need all while maintaining focus on their work. Will you help my students wobble and learn?
