Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

When I began working at my school, my scholars were without music as a special subject class for 7 years. As the new music teacher, I was moved by scholar engagement and how much they loved performing for peers, teachers, leadership,and parents. Scholars with academic and behavioral challenges also thrived in music. After reflecting on a successful first year of music instruction, I set a future goal to broaden scholar skills and exposure to the arts. I also planned to use music to help address some of the academic and behavioral challenges our scholars face.

In 2015, I received a grant to use a rigorous arts based curriculum that combined Common Core and musical theater in "The Lion King Experience." The program culminated in a full-on musical production of Disney's Lion King Kids.

We also took our scholars to see the Broadway touring production Disney's The Lion King in a neighboring city. It was such a rewarding experience socially and academically for our scholars we we're able to do it over again with Disney's Cinderella Kids thanks to our friends at Donors Choose.

Because of the success, we will continue with this model of analyzing, performing, and viewing a shows!

My Project

It is my goal to give my scholars, on stage and in the seats the most authentic musical theater experience as possible. We need assistance with costuming, props, and Items for our set. Costumes help bring stories and characters to life, not only to for the actors but for the audience members as well.

Costumes give courage and confidence to my shyest scholars as they lose inhibitions and excitedly emerge out of his or her shell.

For a school without an auditorium the props and set designs can transform a cafeteria and gymnasium into enchanted worlds of endless hope and possibilities.
