My Students

My students have clay and the facility for firing, however, we lack brushes and glazes.

My students reside in an urban district.

The school is a Title 1 school undergoing radical changes and severe budget cuts. All student are offered free breakfast and lunch. My classroom is utilized by 180 students that are registered in Ceramics 1 and 2. We need various colorful ceramic glazes and brushes to apply the glaze to the students hand made projects.

My Project

I take a historical approach to teaching ceramics. My students gain an appreciation for ceramics through different civilizations and it's evolution from neccessity to artistic solutions. Ceramics is made usable by sealing the surface with glazes and at the same time adding color. We also explore the commerical use of ceramcis in such places as the nose cone of our space ships. This gives them a broad appreciation for clay.

I believe that taking raw materials from the earth and creating a utiliarian as well as decorative object will enhance the students appreiation for nature and all of the potential it offers to humanity.
