My students need a lot of tangible interventions to help them cope and focus. There are a lot of sensory needs and interventions to address attention that I use with students daily.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students here at my school are unique. We are a Title I school, which means we have a lot of low-income families. However, when you step on our campus there is an overwhelming sense of community. With approximately 900 students on our campus, we have only had one suspension this year. Our students are caring and kind to others and make an effort to engage positively with everyone on campus. Our school is not just active from the start of school to the final bell; our teachers and students get here as early as 7am and leave sometimes as late as 6:30, providing stability, consistency, and support to our students and their families.
In the past school year, I had the opportunity to work with 14% of our population, providing individual and group counseling, teaching mindfulness and deep-breathing to students in class, facilitating parenting classes, and served as Co-Coordinator on our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team.
My Project
My goal is to provide students what they need to learn within the classroom setting. Some students need to move around a lot, therefore I want to provide them with wobble chairs and cushions. These help students focus their hyperactivity and give them an outlet to move around appropriately.
Sensory fidget toys are also great interventions for students to use in the classroom.
When managed appropriately, these items help students engage with the class while satisfying their need for sensory stimulation.
Guided meditation and deep breathing exercises are great ways to teach students how to cope with stress and anxiety. By using different tools to teach this, I am able to push into classes instead of pulling individual students out to help them.
I am always trying new ways to help students while keeping them in their regular classroom. I believe this makes students feel more accepted and empowers them to use strategies on their own.
