My students need a multimedia projector, iPad, smart cover and Apple Care warranty for the iPad, as well as a projector cart so we can have virtual pen pals and opportunities for cultural exchanges using Skype.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine what it would be like if your child could come home and tell you they met children on a different continent at school that day, not just one, but an entire class full of children. That's what this project is all about.
My students are third graders who live in a large urban setting.
Most are receiving free or reduced lunch, which means most live in poverty. They came in well below grade level expectations, but we worked very hard and they are making phenomenal progress. They simply love learning and are hooked on moving forward.
My Project
We live in an era of constant testing and while I feel tests are important, I'm feeling like my kids are losing out on more authentic experiences. This is one way I'd like to remedy that. This project would open a door into another land for my students - the geography, the seasons, the terrain, and the people. The children could learn about their socio-cultural norms, how their measurement system is different than ours, what their school day is like, how they dress, or what types of plants grow where they live. We could do the same for them.
With an iPad, we can go outside to show children in another land what falling snow looks like, what our plants look like, and much more. The iPad, projector, and cart would allow us to Skype as an entire class. I also plan on using this to get my students writing!
The enthusiasm sparked by this project will be priceless.
Since my students come from impoverished backgrounds, they don't have the same opportunities as other children. Having an exchange student, trips to museums, nature centers, or better yet trips to another part of the world aren't common experiences for them. That means they lack a lot of background knowledge we see in their peers. This project will help build invaluable background knowledge and foster amazing levels of engagement.
