Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small public middle school serving roughly 370 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 87 percent Latino, and 56 percent of our students are English Learners. In addition, 90 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and seven percent of our students are identified as needing special education services.
Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and uplifting.
My Project
Many of our students do not have the warm gear they need in order to comfortably get to and from school - causing our newcomers to have many more absences. And at times it is even a deterrent for some students to participate at recess.
We are hoping that warm fleece jackets and puffer vests will not make their journey to and from school more comfortable, but that they will be excited to wear their nice gear, which will improve their attendance!
Our students are kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and enthusiastic and it would be so helpful to get this gear so that we feel we have prepared them adequately for life here in Oakland!
