My Students
My students live in a very rural part of Maine close to the end of the Appalachian trail.
They are movers and shakers and I want to foster their need to move and feed their brains.
We are a very small school and funding is low to give them the opportunities with technology and equipment needed to suit their needs. They spend most of their day in one classroom with the standard chairs and tables. They need many opportunities to move their bodies, and rest their brain while energizing.
My Project
Bounce. Wiggle. Stand. Move. Shake. Do you like sitting or standing when you work? Do you like to move around during your day? If you could collaborate in a comfortable space would you choose that space over your office desk or table? What if you could bounce, wobble, move freely, sit on a pillow or stand during your work day? Students are just like you. Their bodies are just smaller. The ability to choose a space within the classroom where a student is comfortable is important to allow their minds to work more freely. My students are movers and shakers.... when they play. It's important to allow them spaces to be together where they are structured and also free to explore working together that isn't only at a conventional table a chair.
I want to give my students opportunities to work collaboratively in unconventional spaces and places within the classroom.
Over time I have created spaces to my students can work together using wobble stools and pillows. I’d like to add to that experience with a large rug to keep pillows in place. I want them to have comfortable bean bag seats to read in the library as well as a comfortable couch to collaborate, read or discuss books. They will continue to have the ability to choose an appropriate place for the kind of work they are doing and they will become adept at making choices to fit their needs. The materials will give my student choices and allow them to make decisions that will impact their learning in a great way.
