Wipe Out the Wiggles in Science Class

My students need to stop wiggling and distracting each other so I am requesting stability balls.

My Students

Were you one of the wiggles? Did the ants come in from recess and stay with you all day? Well, you would have fit right into room 215. I have kids that cannot sit still and bother everyone around them. I would like to try using exercise balls to help control this.

My school is 62% low-income.

We come from every continent except for Antarctica. There are over ten languages spoken at the homes of our children. They are wonderful young adults many who cannot sit still. My school works really hard to help meet their needs-physical, social, and academic. It is not unusual to see the custodians helping with homework first thing in the morning, cafeteria workers lending a supportive ear, and the nurse putting band aids on tiny scratches. We all do this for the kids in our care.

My Project

I have many wonderful students who just cannot sit still. Doing research to find alternative ways to help them turned up this resource: Stability balls, the large inflatable balls used for yoga and exercise, are also used in classrooms in place of chairs. The balls aren't used for fun, but rather to help students sit up straight and engage the muscles and the parts of their brains needed to remain balanced on a large ball. Stability ball classroom chairs provide benefits ranging from quieter classrooms to more attentive students. I would love to give this a trial in my classroom. Not only are there positive behavioral changes, but they help with building strong bodies.

I feel that this donation is going to help my students not only academically, but will help me to meet the needs of their minds, bodies, and spirits.

When working with diverse student bodies, we need to look outside the box to meet the needs of all students.
