Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school, which runs from Pre-k through fifth grade, has great expectations of its scholars, regardless of whatever adverse circumstances or obstacles might stand in their way. This includes the significant population of students in temporary housing with whom I work, whose obstacles can be considerable.
In the face of considerable obstacles, our students in temporary housing demonstrate resilience, persistence, and a love of learning that sustains them throughout the school day.
They so often demonstrate a joy that belies their difficult circumstances.
My Project
For our students in temporary housing, sometimes basic necessities such as quality winter coats can be difficult to obtain. When students do not have proper attire for the cold winter months, they become susceptible to illness and, in turn, poor attendance. Being attired in a new, good-looking jacket will enhance self-esteem, which lends itself to improved academic performance.
A quality winter coat will not only serve as protection from the cold, but will also bolster my students' feelings of self-worth and belonging.
It will allow them to focus on age-appropriate concerns, and it will alleviate one burden faced by their parents.
