This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a special education center high school for students grades K-12. Our amazing program is located in Detroit, Michigan. We serve students with a wide variety of psychiatric, cognitive, and behavioral needs. We service students from the entire city of Detroit. Our school has 50 beautiful, young people with varying strengths and weaknesses. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities. I have students whose parents are my colleagues and students who live in boarded-up houses. Some come from two-parent homes, and some come from three different homes.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
Detroit is cold, and that's a fact. Each winter, dozens of our sweet students arrive at school with no appropriate winter coats to wear. We will see a variety of things from coats that are too small, worn and dirty jackets, springtime wear, or nothing at all.
Our temperatures can reach far below zero and it is deadly for our students to be walking to school or waiting for the bus with no winter coat on. This project will fill a basic health and safety need, as well as help to improve attendance, thereby directly improving the educational outcomes of our students. We are requesting warm coats for boys and girls in all sizes for our K-12 program. We appreciate your consideration and support. Thank You.
