Windows/Doors: Books That Allow Students To See Themselves and Others

My students need books that offer them both windows and doors into their lives and the lives of others to help spark the love of lifetime reading.

My Students

As a newer teacher in a rural low-income/high poverty school district, I am working to support and motivate my students to achieve great things. Despite the challenges they face, both in and out of the classroom, they are eager to learn. Nothing excites me more as a teacher than to see the excitement in a students eyes when they share their favorite characters, stories and books with me.

My students are creative, active and curious.

I love how no matter the circumstances they always see the bright side of things and believe in the magic of learning.

My Project

Current research shows the importance of offering relevant up to date books for students to choose from that allow them identify with. As a new teacher, I want to be able to offer those opportunities for my students, and with the current level of books in my classroom, I do not believe that I offer as many windows and doors that I should. Working in a school district that has many high poverty/low-income students, I know that books can be a wonderful outlet for my students to escape and explore. I want to be able to have a thriving, up to date library that helps foster life long readers in all of my students.

Many people can remember books that changed their lives, books that they remember as their favorite books.

With this project my goal is that by expanding my classroom library with up to date books that offer both windows and doors into students lives, and of others, that I may be lucky enough to have a student find the book that changes their life.
