LES has an increase of Latin X students and are new to our community and wants to offer a cultural enrichment event. Salvadoran author Mario Bencastro is coming to DC at the end of April and will read his book Un tren llamado Esperanza/A Train Called Hope about an unaccompanied minor traveling on a dangerous train in Mexico to get to the US border with our second grade students. It is not a scary book. It is perfect for 2nd -5th graders and provides a unique opportunity for students to engage with diverse perspectives. Students with access to this bilingual book will allow them to see themselves through the eyes of another. This experience will lend itself to a greater connection between the 2nd grade students. This initiative aims to foster a sense of belonging and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds while promoting literacy and cultural appreciation within the school community.
