Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Almost half of my students have said to me this school year, "But I don't know how to read." I have answered all of them by saying, "That is what I am here for! I am going to teach you how to read." I have many years experience teaching diverse learners within the Chicago Public School system in a Resource setting, however, this is only my third year working with students in an Instructional Setting.
Our school serves mostly low-income students in grades K-8 and provides rigorous academics, exceptional teachers and a safe learning environment.
Within our Diverse Learner program, we have started a leveled literacy intervention approach to reading which focuses on systematic, small group instruction. This amazing intervention is creating curious readers who can't wait to get their hands on high-interest, lower level materials that will draw in and hold their attention.
My Project
The Diverse Learners in my room range greatly in their reading ability. As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to engage my Diverse Learners! Many of them learn through pictures and rely on colors and visuals to draw their attention. They are drawn in to reading by high interest materials that have lots of visuals and pictures of real life events and activities.
A Time Kids subscription would allow my students a Window to the World!
Most of my students are from low income families and struggle to experience life outside of our school neighborhood. These Time materials will help my emerging readers to picture important current events that are happening in the world around us.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
