I have the honor and privilege of teaching reading to children in kindergarten through 4th grade. I provide daily small group instruction for interventions.
In order to determine my students' needs, I assess their reading skills and I plan small group lessons to teach them the skills they need for improvement.
It is so rewarding to see them make progress in reading!
I teach at an urban school in a neighborhood where crime and poverty are high. Although many of my students have challenges in their lives, they come to school eager to learn, with smiles on their faces.
My Project
My fourth graders are going to be receiving a brand new boom box with headphones because our last Donor's Choose project was just funded! We just need some more books on CD to complete the listening center that will be set up for them to use during center time. We are in need of mostly non-fiction text.
In the listening center, the children will be able to listen to fluent reading of texts.
Many of the children I work with are not fluent readers, and it is beneficial to have an adult model fluently reading to them. Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
