My students need measurement tools so we can make real world connections to our math unit. Adding these scales and measuring cups will allow us to have centers where the students can have hands on experiences.
My students come from a variety of different cultural backgrounds with over 80% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. For most of my students, the small town they live in is all they know.
We have embarked on an exciting adventure through the Leader in Me program and are helping our students become leaders in the community.
We are teaching them habits that they will use the rest of their lives such as being proactive, putting first things first, and synergizing with others. Despite the tough things my students deal with outside of school, they are eager to learn and do their best.
My Project
Many of my students come to school lacking the focus to complete page after page of math worksheets. Helping them see why math is important and how it is applicable in their real life is extremely important at this age. To be able to do this, I need scales and measuring cups.
I want to make math jump from the textbook page!
The variety of scales and measuring cups will allow us to have math centers where my students can make real-world connections to measurement.
I will use the different scales to let students find objects to estimate and then practice weighing. We can also discuss metric and US customary vocabulary and make comparisons between the two. My students will have the chance to practice liquid measurement and practice adding and subtracting liquids using the measuring cups.
