Help me give my students trail cameras to use on our 179 acre property to do a study on wildlife; we would like to study the wetland area, hardwood area and successional fields to compare animal life.
Our school is such a unique place for our rural students. Many of whom go on to do amazing things in the community. Our students strive to explore science both in and outside the classroom. We strive to educate and build relationships with every student that we come in contact with. Our classes have a high percentage of individuals below the poverty line, who are at-risk students. Yet, even so, our students come every day with a positive, caring attitude. Their social interactions in the learning environment are what draws me to continue teaching. These students are what keep me motivated to expand their minds in the sciences!
My classes are in Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences and typically filled with 20 students who love seeing how technology can expand their world beyond the small-town setting.
They love lessons that engage their tech curiosity beyond their experience. I am always looking for new ways to engage that curiosity.
My Project
The trail cameras will be used on our 179 acre property that has two ponds and several different landscapes. We would like to use them to do studies on the organisms found in different habitats, as well as different times of the year.
Using trail cameras will allow us to be in the woods 24/7 and do quantitative studies on the wildlife at our Townline Road property.
Setting up trail cameras in a successional field, hardwood forest and next to our pond property will allow students to see the different habitat's impact on the wildlife found in that habitat.
The cameras will be used in both Environmental Science classes and living environment classes to quantify wildlife, and track different organisms. Recently fishers have made a comeback, and sightings of bobcats have been made.
