Wildcats Want a Reading Retreat

My students need 10 pillows, a stopwatch, and a lamp to make a welcoming, comfortable place to read and work in partners.

I teach in a rural school in Maine where education is not always valued and many students lack support at home. My fifth grade is a high need class of struggling readers that sometimes have a hard time seeing the point of an education.

Even as fifth graders, these students lack the passion for reading that I think all young students should have. They are pessimistic beyond their years and have started to lose faith in the education system. I have taken it upon myself to restore that faith and rekindle their desire to read and learn.

I have worked very hard to make my classroom a warm and inviting place. In a small school with little funding, most of my supplies come out of my own paycheck. I have painted the room, built book shelves, and purchased rugs. Our reading corner is almost complete, save for a couple of comfy pillows and some better lighting. I want the reading corner to be a place where students want to go, a place where they can dive into the magic of a book, alone or with a partner. I want the area to be a safe place where students can work together to improve their reading and fluency. Ultimately, I want to make learning fun again.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated by me and my students. They come from a proud community that doesn't like to ask for handouts but when something is given to them, they appreciate it more than words can express. These kids don't have a lot, but for at least 7 hours a day I can give them a comfortable, warm, and safe haven to broaden their horizons and get them ready for life.
