Help me give my students different materials like aquatic animal counters, a wild animal sorting kit, and measuring counters so they can engage in fun math activities in the STEM Lab.
I teach in a very small district, that has a high poverty rate, so 100% of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch. My students are excited learners from a low-income area. They love coming to the STEM lab to learn with hands-on materials. I work with every student in my building from Kindergarten all the way to 5th grade.
My students are sponges who love to explore any engineering challenge that I can put in front of them.
They seem to retain information so much more when they can see, touch, and think through the concepts that we work on in class.
Our school is a small community school that doesn't get extra funds for STEM and so I try to reach out for additional support. One of my goals is to get the students interested in STEM careers and love working hands-on with others. The other goal is to engage students in lessons that get them talking and exploring the world around them. This can't happen without the help from people like you.
My Project
I would like to get different sorting animals and counters for my students so they can engage in different math skills while in the lab. The animal counters are always a favorite with students and make adding and subtracting fun. The measuring worms give students practice measuring with non-standard tools and prepare them for using rulers or measuring tapes.
We need materials in our hands, not worksheets, if we want students to learn to love math and these materials will ensure students are stimulated to learn and practice their math skills.
I can't do this without your help though. Please consider donating to our project and giving over 200 students the opportunity to explore math in meaningful ways.
