"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn!" My students want to be involved in their learning and grow up to make great impacts in our country like our forefather, Benjamin Franklin. As a teacher, I try and apply this quote in my classroom every day.
I teach a group of 53 diverse students who are all eager to learn at their own pace.
Our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and many do not have access to the technology that peers across the country are engaged in using every day. Around 60% of my students are on free and reduced lunch, and funds are not available to purchase any new technology. We are left with 4 computers that are over 10 years old, and only work sporadically. I encourage my students to think outside of the box and explore all of the wonderful things they can learn. iPads offer numerous apps to help students think outside of the box and be problem solvers. What a wonderful thing for students who have no exposure to technology at home to have access to it at school! In order to prepare my students to be successful 21st Century learners and citizens, we need better technology. I want my students to become more engaged and blossom into deeper thinkers, starting at a young age.
My Project
All educators and parents can agree, students learn at different paces and through different learning styles. It is particularly important during those formative years in elementary school learning the basics, that students get the personalized learning they need. That is where the iPad comes in. Using iPads, I can reinforce what is being taught, allowing students to practice certain skills at their own level and pace. It seems like there's an app for everything these days. iPad apps are changing the way students grasp new concepts and allow them an infinite amount of opportunities to learn. Fun educational games can really take learning to a whole new level, getting students more excited than ever! Never before has it been easier to create and share content with others. The touch interface of iPads promote collaboration and communication between students to create more meaningful and lasting learning! There is nothing better than a student who is enthusiastic about learning!
Today's K-12 students are a unique generation.
These students are digital natives (Prensky, 2001) or those who have grown up with technology and those who have
adapted to it. Students today live in a world where digital technology is part of the texture of their daily lives. Research has shown drastic increases, up to 60% growth in literacy when iPads are used in the classroom. Please help me close the gap and reach all my students at their own unique level through iPads!
