My students come from very low socio-economic backgrounds. We have many free or reduced price lunch participants as well as free breakfast served in the classroom each day. This is not the most important thing about my students, however. These students are spending many hours a week learning how to improve their personal and social lives by working on their social emotional skills.
These kids are working towards not only being well educated, but being valuable members of society, finding a respectful and powerful voice to make sure they can have an impact on their large world.
These kids are movers and shakers. They have an incredible sense of right and wrong and are driven to bring justice to minority groups. These kids deserve the best education possible in the best environment and typical desks and chairs are not the most conducive to twenty-first century learning.
Adults don't have to, nor would they, sit in plastic chairs and composite desks for the hours that we ask students to. It's important to allow students appropriate places to sit when they can move an appropriate amount while still being in control and learning how to sit for long periods of time.
My Project
These materials will have a profound impact on students' learning because they can learn to fidget in the appropriate way. Humans are not meant to sit still for eight hours a day. Flexible seating helps our kids be comfortable and lets their brains move as well as their bodies!
Students need an appropriate way to move while working and flexible seating will give them that.
When students have choices about seating, they can focus on work more than moving. Students will be introduced to this seating slowly and will eventually get to choose their preferred seating arrangement.
As a teacher, I will also be yard sale shopping in order to provide large, comfortable chairs and a high top cafe table.
