As an educator, I understand that my classroom is not only a place for academic exploration but just as importantly, a home. My students understand the community we create is one of respect, understanding, empathy, and integrity. This community based learning is not unique to only my classroom; this is held as the standard for all classrooms at my school. They foster education for the whole child, truly going above and beyond to cater to the needs of each student as well as their families.
Serving a large underrepresented group of youths, I am proud to be a member of this school, as its teachers work unbelievably hard to give each child the most opportunities for success.
My job responsibilities are numerous but my students know first and foremost they are the next generation of community changers and lifelong learners. This knowledge inspires them to be internally motivated to create their own futures. With the continuation of my support along with that of the school, these children have a limitless future.
In our classroom, students understand that learning requires a growth mindset--that giving up in the classroom is not an option. My group of amazing future leaders understands the power of teamwork, hard work, and dedication. These character traits are reinforced daily through partner work, small group work, and whole class discussions. I am unbelievably proud to be their educator, and I know my job has multiple responsibilities, not limited to creating the best environment possible for my students to excel. I try to incorporate as much movement as possible for my students to interact with each other and learn from each other. When I reflect on my teaching I've asked myself, "How do I create an environment where student voice and choice is not only encouraged but practiced?" As I look around the physical space in my classroom I realize that flexible seating allows for this opportunity.
I want to create a classroom that helps students focus on their studies while providing the opportunity for student choice, allowing students to practice self-advocacy while working with others.
The balance balls are easily movable and can help cut down on transition time when my students work in groups. They also help engage the core muscles, and for my students that get the wiggles often, can help them stay active while learning. The pump will be extremely useful for maintenance of these balance balls. The adjustable tabletops allow students to stay at their desks but to stand while learning. They are also easily movable. All of these resources can greatly improve student comfort while learning, and therefore increase their focus and resiliency to create a growth mindset. Allowing students to advocate for themselves, understanding what resources can help them, creates a greater learning experience.
