My students need wiggle seats to help keep them focused for 55 minute class periods. The learning is intense and essential. We believe these chairs could help keep our students focused and engaged.
One of the toughest challenges in teaching is keeping our students focused and engaged in their learning. These challenges are then added to other struggles such as learning disabilities and physical disabilities. We have had several recommendations from other teachers to look into Engagement Stools after multiple attempts to add tennis balls and pool noodles to the bottom of classroom chairs to keep our wiggling students moving while working.
We were able to see them in action with students that struggle with attention.
The outcome is amazing how the focus shifts from creating a rocking chair out of a stable chair to focusing on classwork while rocking calmly in a safer student wiggle seat. The Engagement Stools we have found would be both safe and effective in meeting this need. It is very encouraging knowing we could relieve some attention issues and focus more on student learning with these chairs.
Our students deserve the best environment to learn in. We truly believe that these seats will help.
My Project
Mrs. Hinds (Resource Teacher) and myself (Reading Specialist) have been working together for the last 10 years. We have worked very hard to grow our students in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Our population of students include children on IEP's and students that are not on IEP's but need a little extra assistance in those subject areas. The students qualify for our intervention program through various assessments. Our students are in grades K-5. The intensity of our program grows with age and need of the individual student.
Our students may struggle in various subjects, but we are confident that we can get them to grown in confidence and their academic abilities.
Over the years we have had many success stories that have made us very passionate about our jobs. We have made it a priority to give our students small group instruction time four days out of the school week. This small group time allows them to work with peers that are similar in ability. We can see their academic potential when they are working within these groups. Our students appreciate their small group time and attention. They want to be successful, and enjoy the extra assistance.
