Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to be the Special Education teacher at a PK-8 Charter School in Bonita Springs, Florida. The majority of students on my caseload have ADHD and because children with ADHD benefit from physical activity, our school is a great fit. Our school is one of a select 2% in the nation offering physical fitness every day to every student . . . a benefit to each and every student!

The Special Education students I have the privilege of serving have a variety of special needs and all are truly unique in their learning styles and their ability to attend in the classroom.

My students love having their own, unique "toolboxes" which contain strategies, fidgets, and other devices to help them be proactive in managing their disabilities.

The majority of our students are from low-income homes and as a result, the students have limited resources. Many were displaced from their homes by flooding associated with Hurricane Irma. The disaster has renewed our spirits and together we are strong! I want to help my students overcome their disabilities and be the best students they can be.

My Project

Almost all of my Special Education students have some degree of ADHD. Sitting still in class is difficult (if not impossible) for them!

Wobble seats, bouncy bands, bouncy ball seating, and weighted lap fidgets really help my students stay attentive to the tasks at hand while smaller fidget devices keep their hands busy.

I have purposely chosen quiet devices because my students are inclusive; they are mainstreamed into the general population of the school, so quiet things are not a distraction to their peers and are less obvious to those seated near them.

Fidget toys keep hands busy while allowing their minds to relax and focus, while pencil grips encourage a proper grip and lessen writing fatigue (writing is a non-preferred activity for many of my students; it is difficult for them and the situation can definitely be worsened by tired hands and wrists). Timers are an essential tool for students with ADHD and especially for children on the Autism spectrum. Timers will provide a tool for organizing the students' school days and make their schedules predictable and less frightening. In addition to timers, I use visual schedules and have found colorful masking tape is helpful when organizing student desks and schedules.

Sensory devices such as fluorescent light covers, wobble seats, and weighted lap pillows ground my students and help them self-calm. Bouncy bands for desks aid in dispersing that abundant extra energy. Chenille stems are pleasantly tactile and allow an opportunity for students to create their own fidget devices. All the items will make a positive difference to my students' abilities to focus and learn.
