I work in a Title I school where students come with varying interests, learning styles and face many challenges in and out of school. My young learners come from diverse backgrounds with many mixed abilities. They are exploring their surroundings and learning what school is all about!
My Project
Flexible seating allows students the option to control their physical environments in which they work best. When students have options for seating they gain control of their surroundings that leads to autonomy and comfort to stay engaged and focused. When students are engaged it improves their overall behavior, increases academic performance, and maintains higher motivation. Providing flexible seating during independent work or carpet work time students are able to choose a location in the classroom that works for them. I have noticed amazing differences in motivation and behavior in other classrooms when students are given a choice in their seating. With the impact of the coronavirus, students now more than ever need movement and play throughout their day and in their learning.
Students are more engaged and less disruptive of their peers when they have a choice in their work environment and creativity in their play.
The products I have chosen will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make effective learning choices. The stools will allow students to sit at tables with movement, while the cushions and lap desks will allow students to sit on the floor or lay on their stomachs. All seating options are lightweight and can be easily moved to different areas of the classroom by the students.
My students also need hands on centers to work at after they have completed their assignments. I have added STEM certified centers for students to explore and create using their imagination while working on motor skills.
