Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the honor of shaping 17 brilliant minds! My students are predominantly African American and Latino. Our school is truly a special place for my students. It is a school where student voices, cultures and backgrounds are validated. My students leave with a true sense of who they are!

As a teacher, I pride myself on creating a welcoming classroom culture where my students are comfortable and have an active learning environment.

Flexible seating has worked miracles in my classroom and I look forward to creating this opportunity for my next group of students. My students have become more aware of their learning styles and have benefited so much from being able to wiggle and work. My students enjoy working and rotating through literacy centers because of this increased focus and level of comfort. My students have truly developed into independent learners.

My Project

This year I chose to change my classroom into a flexible seating classroom. Since making this change, I couldn't imagine my classroom any other way! My students have been thriving with the freedom to wiggle and work comfortably throughout the day.

I want to build on what has already proved to be a successful shift in my classroom.

The students are still at a young age and the expectation of sitting at a desk all day provides difficulties. By providing students with choice, they are able to focus on each individual task in a way that works for them. It also helps students recognize their learning style and to practice making positive choices that will benefit them as learners. They also realize that this might look different for each child as well as each day.

With the new tables, more students can work comfortably, whether that be standing or sitting. With two new wobble chairs, we will have a complete table where more students will be able to explore that seating option. The storage container will make it easier to store and manage our centers, which will make small group centers even better! The contribution of these items will impact student achievement by providing opportunities for students to truly develop as learners through collaboration and reflection while working rigorously to achieve our goals.
