Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a special education classroom, sensory tools, fidget items, and calm-down materials are not just helpful—they are essential. Many students experience challenges with sensory processing, emotional regulation, and maintaining focus throughout the school day. Providing access to these supports creates an environment where students feel safe, understood, and ready to learn. Sensory and fidget materials help students meet their individual sensory needs. Some students seek movement or tactile input, while others may need calming, repetitive actions to stay regulated. Items such as fidget tools, textured materials, weighted objects, and sensory bins allow students to channel their energy in a positive and productive way. When students’ sensory needs are met, they are better able to focus on instruction, participate in activities, and engage with their peers.

By integrating sensory, fidget, and calm-down materials into the classroom, we are not only supporting students’ immediate needs but also teaching lifelong skills.

Students learn how to identify what their bodies and minds need, advocate for themselves, and use healthy strategies to manage their emotions. These tools help create a more inclusive, supportive, and successful learning environment for every child .Calm-down tools play a critical role in supporting students’ emotional well-being. Many students in a special education setting experience big feelings and may need additional support to recognize and manage their emotions. A designated calm-down space with items like soft seating, visual supports, timers, breathing tools, and soothing sensory objects provides students with a structured way to reset. Instead of becoming overwhelmed, students can use these tools to practice self-regulation strategies and return to learning more quickly. During instruction, fidget tools may be offered to help students maintain attention. During transitions or moments of frustration, students can access the calm-down area to regulate their emotions.
