As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges within the classroom and outside of the classroom. Many of my students live in one parent households or blended families with many siblings.
I try my best to maintain routine, schedules, and happiness daily in my classroom.
My students need someone to show them their potential and growth, without the limits of their socioeconomic status. Our school has a variety of ethnic backgrounds, races, and cultures. We do have a larger Hispanic population, at 45%.
These students range from learning the English language, as they have just moved into our county, to transitioning out of the English Language Learners program. I love getting to watch these students shine when the language falls into place. It means the world to me when I see my students light up and understand what they are learning. I love when my students can lead the class and feel like they have somewhere to belong.
My Project
Last year, I was able to get my county office to find 12 tables for the second-grade classrooms at my school. These tables allowed us to remove desks and allow students more freedom to work in an area they choose. My students have an assigned seat for morning work, but after that, they move around to tables and share community supplies. I am beyond excited that each of our rooms now has 4 tables for our kids to work collaboratively on assignments and projects. The problem now is we are lacking flexible seating for kids to work where they are most comfortable. My tables are set up with old metal chairs that are uncomfortable and are not easy to move around. A lot of my students ask to sit on the floor often or on pillows that I have made.
My students don't belong is 1950, so why am I asking them to sit in seats or desks that way!
Every kid cannot sit in a regular seat and complete their work, it isn't easy for them. Many businesses and companies offer different seating or standing options to their employees, so why am I not doing this in my class? I need students to have these wobble stools to give them the flexibility to work and move at the same time! My students have a hard time sitting in these metal chairs and want to stand up or on the floor a lot. I want to give my students more options for seating. These wobble stools will give me that ability!
