I hear often from parents when students are absent about the sadness they show when not able to attend school that day. We begin our day with lots of movement and activities that get our bodies ready to learn. We would benefit from sensory supports throughout our day to help keep us going.
I teach a self-contained K-3 autism classroom.
Most of my students are non-verbal and the severity of their disabilities vary. Despite their varying disabilities, my students are quite busy throughout the day. Consistent sensory breaks allow my students to feel organized and calm and prepares them for learning. While continuing to strive for an optimal learning environment, providing these supports would greatly enhance what is already in place. The school has a total of 353 students currently enrolled. There a two autism classrooms within the school, ranging from grades K-6. These materials will be used for all students within these classrooms.
My Project
Since the classrooms are separate from our sensory room, the materials requested would be beneficial to use within the classrooms on a consistent basis. These materials will provide students with multiple opportunities for increased sensory input throughout their day, thus allowing for optimal task focus and engagement in learning. The use of weighted lap pads, move n sit cushions and the vibrating cushion will provide the students with the necessary sensory input they need and require. The cozy shades will help dim the fluorescent lighting to create a more calming atmosphere. The hearing protectors help our children who have auditory defensiveness by decreasing various noises and allowing for increased productivity.
These sensory materials will help our children with autism to function and reach their fullest potential within the educational setting.
Thank you in advance for supporting my children by considering our project through your donations to our classrooms.
