Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eager to learn, my 27 first graders are full of energy and excitement and ready to tackle the challenges of living in a low socioeconomic neighborhood in Anaheim, CA. My class consists of a wide variety of student learning needs. They come to school with speech and language disabilities, emotional and behavioral challenges, and some are dealing with homelessness. Two-thirds of my students live in a household where English is not their first language. Two-thirds receive a free or reduced-price lunch.
Even though they come to school with challenges, they are still eager to learn to read, write, and meet the 21st-century skills of today.
Recently our school adopted the distinguished practice of STEAM, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. While this is an exciting change for our community, it does pose challenges as far as providing the students with the materials and resources needed to adopt this new distinguished practice. The students are eager and excited to delve into engineering units and watching them embrace these ideas is exciting to me as a teacher.
My Project
Six- and seven-year-olds are naturally made to move. However, the traditional classroom asks them to sit in chairs that not move for six hours a day. I know that developmentally this is not appropriate. I am very aware of my students need to move so I change activities and seating often during the course of my instruction. They move between sitting on the carpet, buckets, and a traditional chair every 15-20 minutes. For the majority of my students, this flexibility satisfies their need to move. However, for a few, it still isn't enough! Fifteen to twenty minutes of staying still is more than their active bodies can handle. To satisfy their need to move, they tip their chairs on one or two feet which causes them to fall. Instead of allowing them to move the way their little bodies need to I have to redirect them to sit safely.
The Kore Wobble Chair will provide my most active children a chair that allows them to move while learning but still be safe.
This will allow them to spend their time learning rather than trying to sit in a chair that inhibits their natural need to move. For two years I saved my reading club bonus points to get one of these chairs and when we finally got one, it has been great. The child who gets to sit in it has been able to focus her attention on learning so much better. She is happier and safe! The only problem is I have just one chair and a half a dozen students who need one. I know that more of these chairs will have an incredible impact on the lives of my most active students for years to come.
